Questions & Answers
1 - How can I benefit from Crash Assist?
Crash Assist is currently offered to Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia automerit customers. To benefit from this new feature, simply update to the latest version of the belairdirect app and complete the quick activation process.
Please note that Crash Assist is available for iPhones (iOS 11 or higher) and Android phones (version 5.0 or higher).
2 - Do I have to pay an additional fee for Crash Assist?
No. Crash Assist is offered at no additional cost. It is our way of being there for you when you need it the most.
3 - Can I have Crash Assist if I am not an active automerit customer?
No. Crash Assist is currently offered exclusively to a restricted group of automerit customers.
4 - How does Crash Assist detect accidents?
Crash Assist analyses data from the GPS, accelerometer and gyroscope of your phone to detect accidents based, amongst other things, on acceleration and deceleration patterns, driving speed and abrupt stop.
5 - Which data does Crash Assist use?
Crash Assist uses data that are already used by automerit to assess how safely you drive. To detect accidents in real-time, Crash Assist simply uses a different algorithm to process your GPS, accelerometer and gyroscope data.
6 - Why do I need to allow push notifications and access to location and motion data to activate Crash Assist?
Crash Assist must access to your location and motion data to be able to detect accidents in real-time.
Push notifications must be allowed in order for Crash Assist to send you a notification giving you access to assistance options when an accident is detected.
7 - Does Crash Assist detect all types of accidents?
While the algorithm is continuously being refined to achieve higher levels of precision and accuracy, Crash Assist is mainly designed to detect moderate to severe accidents.
Low severity crashes, fender benders and accidents happening within the first kilometer of a trip may not be detected.
If this happens to you, don’t worry. Your Crash Assist options are available at all times in the assistance tab of your belairdirect app, whether an accident has been detected or not.
8 - Does Crash Assist work on any device?
Crash Assist is currently only available for iPhones with iOS 11 or above. It is not available for Android phones yet, but we are working hard to make that happen in the future.
9 - How can I enable / disable Crash Assist?
You can enable / disable Crash Assist via the assistance tab of your belairdirect app.
10 - Can I use the assistance options even if Crash Assist didn’t detect an accident?
Yes. Your Crash Assist options are available at all times in the assistance tab of your belairdirect app, whether an accident has been detected or not.
11 - I was in an accident, but Crash Assist did not detect it, why?
Crash Assist is designed to detect moderate to severe accidents. Minor crashes, fender-benders and accidents happening at very low speed or within the first kilometer of a trip are at a higher risk of going undetected.
An accident may also go undetected if:
- You have low GPS signal
- You have low cell phone reception
- Your phone is in Do not Disturb mode
- Your phone is in Low power mode or has low battery levels
Also note that Crash Assist will not work if:
- You don’t have a data plan or internet connection
- Crash assist is disabled
- Access to push notifications, location and motion permissions are not allowed
12 - The app falsely detected an accident, what should I do?
In the rare event of a false positive, simply disregard the notification or, once in the app, tap the “I was not in an accident” link at the bottom of the screen to let us know you’re okay.
13 - Does dropping my phone or slam on the brakes activate Crash Assist?
No. The Crash Assist algorithm has been honed using thousands of real-world car accidents and is able to detect the difference between a dropped phone and a crash.
14 - An accident was detected but I decided not to claim. Will it impact my premium?
No. If you decide not to file a claim, the accident will not appear on your file and there will be no impact on your premium.
